Proverbs 9:10 - Part 2

Proverbs 9:10 – Pt. 2

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

So now, how does that fear lead to the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding?

In Proverbs 1:7, it says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.” We read in Romans 1:21-22 that there were people that knew God, but failed to recognize Him and His wisdom. They claimed to be wise, but became fools, and tried to change God into their own image. Too many people try to downgrade Him, and try to turn Him into one of their “buddies”, or He’s just there like a genie in a bottle, to grant our wishes. Once we see Almighty God for who He is, when we can fall down and worship Him, then we can begin to attain wisdom.

Wisdom can be defined as the appropriate application of knowledge. It can also be defined as seeing life from God’s perspective and responding accordingly. We are told to seek it.

Proverbs 3:13 - Happy is the man who finds wisdom, And the man who gains understanding;

Proverbs 16:16 - How much better to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.

The wisdom of God can help us separate godly wisdom from earthly wisdom. We may think that the knowledge we learn is from God, but we may be missing some key points that define a wise person. For example…

Exodus 20:3,14 - “You shall have no other gods before Me. 14 - (for you shall worship no other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God).

Psalm 14:1 - The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, They have done abominable works, There is none who does good.

Matthew 22:37 - Do not go after other gods to serve them and worship them, and do not provoke Me to anger with the works of your hands; and I will not harm you.’

A Christian should always seek out godly wisdom in everything they do. God has the answers for everything pertaining to life and godliness. Staying focused on unimportant things can cause one to get off track, and possibly losing their eternal soul to eternal punishment.

Do you remember the parable of the rich fool in Luke 12:13-21? He wasn’t focused on the right things. So consumed with his earthly possessions. Verse 22 says, But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’

Without God, our decisions will be based on human understanding and judgements. When we involve the fear of God in every decision we make in our lives, we can live knowing He has approved our life. We can understand the Holy One. He will be involved in everything you do, as it should be. To live in sin is foolish. To live righteously is wise. We can have a better relationship with God, and learn to fear Him, respect Him, love Him, and understand Him better.
